Litter-Robot: Cleaning Your Litter-Robot for Odour Control

The Litter-Robot does need thorough cleaning from time to time, to keep it from developing odour issues. In particular, the globe, which is the cat litter tray part, does require washing like a normal cat litter tray from time to time, depending on number of cats, litter choice, and climate. If the rubber liner is not cleaned in a timely manner, it may develop odour issues which are hard to remove and can require replacement.

We recommend cleaning the globe if there is noticeable odour by washing thoroughly with a mild cleaner such as dish-washing detergent, and a soft dust pan style brush.  Do not use bleach products on the Litter-Robot as bleach is very corrosive to any metal components. If there are persistent odour issues, a pet-oriented enzyme product maybe needed to assist  in cleaning. Regular cleaning suited to your conditions is recommended to maintain your Litter-Robot well

There are no electronics in the globe, so you can soak it in a tub or hose it down. Its best to use a soft dust-pan style brush to clean the inside of the globe, including rubber liner which you dont need to remove to clean. Once you're finished cleaning the globe, be sure that it is completely dry before adding litter. If it is not dry, the litter will clump prematurely and may get clogged in the ports or litter pocket.

Over time, you will also need to check and change the carbon filter located in the waste drawer. The carbon filter is designed to contain odor within the drawer. The carbon filter can be gently rinsed in clean water (no soap) and sun dried. If there is still odour present, its time to replace your filter. Replacement carbon filters may be ordered on our website by following this link: Litter Robot Accessories.

It is simple to remove the filter from the brackets, and fit a replacement.

If the grey fuzzy seals on the top of the base need to be replaced, you can purchase these as well. They are self-sticking, and can be removed with pliers, tweezers or fingers. To keep your seals in good condition longer, do not allow your Robot to overfill with waste in the tray, and clean as regularly as needed depending on number of cats, litter use and climate. A stiff brush such as a kitchen dish brush or nail brush is a good item to use to brush any litter and dust out of the seals when doing a deep clean.

If you are having issues with odour, choosing a better litter maybe the solution. Tips for suitable litter in the Litter-Robot are

  1. fast clumping
  2. low dust
  3. carbon or activated charcoal additive to help absorb odours in globe and tray, especially in hot climates.

If you experience ongoing issues with liner odour, please review information on deep cleaning the Litter-Robot.

As a note, if you notice an increase in odours, your feline friend may not be feeling well. If your cat has unusual bowel movements, you should check her environment (food, water, etc.) for any changes. If she seems to be ill, take her to a veterinarian for medical assistance. Checking the contents of the waste drawer for any unusual deposits can help you monitor your pets health.
